We study the distribution of product, in this case gas, to commercial and residential customers by truck. These customers receive deliveries in a Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) contract, which gives companies the flexibility to determine when and what volume to deliver, and what routes to choose. The decision problem that is associated with distributing a product to a large set of VMI customers is called the Inventory Routing Problem (IRP). In this book, we develop an algorithm for practical use that solves this problem and also incorporates a method that balances delivery volumes on a longer term, in order to mitigate the effects of large seasonal peaks in product demand. Our algorithm effectively uses the flexibility provided by VMI, as it improves efficiency and lowers costs by decreasing the number of travelled kilometers required to deliver the product.

The jackknife is a resampling method that uses subsets of the original database by leaving out one observation at a time from the sample. The paper develops fast algorithms for jackknifing inequality indices with only a few passes through the data. The number of passes is independent of the number of observations. Hence, the method provides an efficient way to obtain standard errors of the estimators even if sample size is large. We apply our method using micro data on individual incomes for Germany and the US.

The local goat of Assam is a dwarf variety single or multicolored non-descript species. Its economic importance lies on its prolificacy, production of high quality meat and skin. The present study was conducted on twenty four healthy female Assam local goats from birth to six months of age including one control group. They were divided into eight age groups consisting of three animals in each group. The number of visible small Graafian follicles decreased but medium and large Graafian follicles increased with the advancement of age. Maximum number of oocytes recovered from medium types of follicles followed by recovery from large and small types. Most of the oocytes recovered from small and medium types of follicles were of A type whereas from large types were of C and N types. The mean diameter of all types of follicles, and their oocytes and nuclei increased with the advancement of age. The higher values in respect of physiological and histomorphological aspects, as recorded in the higher age groups (5 to 6 months) could be utilized for induction of puberty and practiced in E.T.T. in this species of goat.

It deals with the optimal control of a one-machine multiple-product manufacturing system with setup changes, operating in a continuous time dynamic environment. The system is deterministic. When production is switched from one product to the other, a known constant setup time and a setup cost are incurred. Each product has specified constant processing time and constant demand rate, as well as an infinite supply of raw material. The problem was formulated as a feedback control problem. The optimal solution provides the optimal production rate and setup switching epochs as a function of the state of the system (backlog and inventory levels). For the steady state, the optimal cyclic schedule was determined. To solve the transient case, the system’s state space was partitioned into [n(n-1)/2], where n is the number of products, mutually exclusive regions such that with each region, the optimal control policy was determined analytically. From the result of analysis, a number of useful recommendations were made. The book is relevant in manufacturing Industries
