In this experimental investigation, the performance and emission characteristics in dual fuel mode with hydrogen inducted along with air adopting carburetion technique are studied on a direct injection, single cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled, stationary diesel engine coupled to an electric dynamometer. Results showed that the specific energy consumption reduces. The brake thermal efficiency and NOx increases compared to baseline diesel. Other emissions, such as, hydrocarbon, carbon-di-oxide and carbon monoxide reduces compared to baseline diesel.
This study evaluates the use of biodiesel as an alternative fuel for diesel engines. The fuel properties, performance, emission characteristics and combustion characteristics of a four-stroke, four-cylinder water cooled, direct injection (DI) diesel engine operated on biodiesel, 20% biodiesel,30% biodiesel and 50% biodiesel blended fuels were measured. Results related to the direct use of biodiesel as a diesel engine fuel indicate that this is possible but not preferable because of its high viscosity and cetane number. Biodiesel could be used in the blends with diesel fuel, because most of the measured properties of the biodiesel-diesel blended fuels were close to those of the diesel fuel. It was found that the performance parameters of the biodiesel-diesel blended fuels did not differ greatly from those of diesel fuel. A slight power decrease, with an increase in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), was noticed with the blend fuels. Smoke emissions were reduced for the blends while NOx was increased remarkably for the biodiesel-blended fuels. It is consequently argued that biodiesel appears to offer a potential alternative “greener” energy substitute for fossil fuel.
This article presents the test result of four stroke, single cylinder, direct injection, water cooled diesel engine operating on linseed oil and diesel blend. The use of vegetable oil as a fuel in diesel engine cause some problem due to their high viscosity compared with conventional diesel fuel. Various techniques and methods are used to solve the problems resulting from high viscosity. One of these techniques is fuel blending. Non edible Vegetable oil like linseed oil is blended with diesel in various proportions like 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%, and find optimum blend which gives improved engine performance and emission characteristics. From experiment it is observed that brake thermal efficiency of L30D70 optimum compare to other blend. Also fuel consumption increased with increase in blend proportion. Also, CO emission decreased by increased in blend concentration and HC and NOx emission increased by increased in blend proportion. The blend of L30D70 could be useful without more affecting the engine performance.
An experimental study has been carried out for pyrolysis oil and diesel blend was used in single cylinder, 4-stroke diesel engine. Pyrolysis oil is obtained from tire waste by pyrolysis process. Pyrolysis process is a therm-o-chemical decomposition of organic matter in absence of oxygen. Blending of pyrolysis oil with diesel helps to reduce the consumption of diesel fuel. Diesel engine is already optimized for particular fuel i.e. diesel. So, it does not give optimum performance for pyrolysis and diesel blend. In this study, parameters i.e. load, blend proportion and injection pressure were taken as variable for optimization. Optimization of these three parameters is done by DOE (Taguchi Method), which gives optimum performance for given bland.
The bulk of the small-scale industries (bakeries, steel works and, grains, cassava, seeds and vegetable mills) and rural electrification schemes in developing countries are supplied with electric power from diesel generators. These diesel generators are often operated for upwards of eight hours in a day, which brings to focus the endurance of the generators if run on Jatropha biodiesel. Thus, this work investigated the endurance characteristics of Compression Ignition Engine run on Jatropha biodiesel in comparison to fossil diesel. Five test runs on a diesel engine operated on diesel fuel and Jatropha biodiesel blends each were conducted. The outcome of this work will determine whether a diesel engine run on Jatropha biodiesel could endure long hours of operation considering the dependence on diesel engine prime movers in the generation of electric power for use in small scale industries and the rural areas. A positive outcome can enhance diversity in the supply of diesel fuel and contribute to securing sustainability in its supply. It should also be useful to research fellows, students as well as governments’ policy makers and administrators.
Nowadays, NOX emission is one of the serious problems of direct injection (DI) diesel engines, which is concerned to be solved with different new technologies. On the other hand, in gasoline engine or spark ignition (SI) engine, NOX emission is lower than diesel engine. But its efficiency is low. Therefore, the concept of diesel engine for achieving a high efficiency and the concept of gasoline engine for its low emissions especially NOX, can be mixed. Thus, gasoline direct injection compression ignition (GDCI) is introduced as a new combustion system that overcomes the limitations of diesel and gasoline engines. In the present experimental study, the concept of GDCI is achieved by using a hot surface ignition system instead of using a compression ignition system to initiate combustion. So, it is called a gasoline direct injection hot surface ignition system. The objective of this work is an aim to investigate the ignition characteristics of the spray, such as ignition delay, duration of burn (combustion) and duration of injection for the format of gasoline direct injection hot surface ignition heavy duty engine at different fuel injection and cylinder air pressures.

Bio-diesel is an oxygenated, non-toxic, sulphur free, biodegradable,renewable and alternative fuel for petroleum diesel.In this project Evaluation of food based and non food based bio-diesel has been made for four bio-diesel blends. I have used different blends of palm, castor & karanja oils with diesel in combination of 40% & 60% those are PKB40,PKB60,PCB40,PCB60. Also analysed smoke levels at various injection pressures of 190 bar,210bar & 220bar as Fuel injection pressure plays a very important role in the combustion process of diesel engine and hence affects the engine performance. This will give important perspective on how bio-diesel blends can give performance comparable to petroleum diesel.
World is facing two important problems, one is Energy crises and another one is Pollution. Day by day increase in number industries which throw pollutant gases to the atmosphere and number of automobiles causes these two problems. The main objective of this research work was to optimize the performance and emission parameters. Emissions of single cylinder, 4 stroke water cooled, HSI CI engine running on direct injection system along with different rate of methanol and EGR. Engine tests have been carried out with the aim of obtaining comparative measures of engine performance parameters like brake power, brake specific fuel consumption and emissions such as CO, HC, NOx, CO2 to evaluate and compute the behavior of diesel engine running on above mentioned parameters. To compensate the emission parameters compression ratio of the engine was varied from 18:1 to 20:1. The optimized compression ratio has been selected with increase percentage of methanol and exhaust gas recirculation rate. Due to proper conversion of heat into work emission parameter got affected at higher compression ratio.
